Khoi Vinh’s review published on Letterboxd:
Another putative win for representation delivered in the form of a terrible movie. Watching this, I was struck by how miserable a place the Marvel cinematic universe is. It’s utterly plasticine and extremely fake, like an endless landscape of green screens populated by hollow, violent people. “Shang-chi” is just a package tour for westerners through Marvel’s painfully disingenuous, semi-woke “Orient.” It’s no accident that it feels like a sequel to the wholly inauthentic “Raya and the Last Dragon,” also starring Awkwafina and also produced by Disney. The whole thing feels rote and unsurprising; in fact I got so bored I slept through most of the final act.
