Somewhere in the Night

Somewhere in the Night ★★★

If this story were made today, well, no one would buy the hokey amnesia premise today but let's just say IF it were made today, it would be much more breathless and much more action-packed. As it stands, this rather tame noir is almost comically under-caffeinated when its increasingly obvious mystery eventually switches into action gear—the gunplay is almost just a footnote to a pace that might best be likened to seniors speed-walking through a shopping mall. Nevertheless, director Joseph L. Mankiewicz does put in the effort to hold it all together with a reasonably compelling story, and he pays particular attention to the dialogue, which is enjoyably sharp and light on its feet.
