The Badlanders

The Badlanders ★★★

Easily the worst looking transfer I’ve ever seen on The Criterion Channel. The movie itself is also clearly inferior to John Huston’s masterpiece “The Asphalt Jungle,” which was based on the same book, and it takes a little while to get going, but once it does, it delivers a whallop of its own. First of all, the heist at the heart of this flick is the robbery of a mine—a mine! The plan is to actually mine that mine in secret. For real. Daves somehow finds legitimate tension in the caper though, and it’s quite effective. Second, Ernest Borgnine and Katy Jurado are one of the most beautiful screen couples in history.
