The Bride of Frankenstein

The Bride of Frankenstein ★★★½

Less of a "horror" movie than a story about something "horrible," meaning that it's hardly frightening anymore as much as it is stagey and camp. The characters hardly seem to talk to one another at all; instead they make lengthy oratorical declarations as if reciting a monologue to a packed theater. Still, it's all pulled together in a delightfully cohesive way, especially with the beautifully expressionistic photography, and Whale's deep understanding of the themes underpinning the monster.
