The Gentlemen

The Gentlemen ★★½

Two ridiculous hours of bad Cockney accents, over-the-top machismo, and a series of characters cruelly “getting what they deserve.” It’s not edifying, but it’s also not true to say that there are no intermittently diverting stretches. Mostly, this is due to Ritchie being more in control of his craft, such as it is, than before. McConaughey’s character is underwritten and as usual his performance is underwhelming, but Hunnam, who has over the past decade-plus has built an impressive streak of film performances of unmatched blandness, actually seems more at home and even a little interesting in this hackneyed milieu. A little.
