I saw this at this year’s Noir City film festival in San Francisco and was very pleasantly surprised. It obviously doesn’t fit the traditional definition of a film noir, and I hadn’t even realized that any adaption of this story had ever been of particular noteworthiness. It did much more than exceed low expectations though; it manages to be genuinely gripping throughout, thanks in no small part to the convenient fact that it gets to trade in Wildean dialogue.
