The Pigeon Tunnel

The Pigeon Tunnel ★★★

This generally entertaining documentary is a confusing mashup of incisive inquiry and over-the-top re-creations and production design. To be clear, it looks great, but you have to wonder why a survey of a writer who has specialized in the pathos of mundanity and tedium needs to look this great, this ornamental. Cornwall/le Carré is too fascinating a character to be completely suffocated by the decorative overkill, but between the aesthetic intensity and le Carré’s often matter-of-fact reticence, you can’t help but think there’s even more story here than Morris was able to access.
