  • Batman Returns

    Batman Returns

I saw this movie in theaters and thought it was flat and dissatisfying then, and now watching it decades later it comes across even worse. What’s most surprising is how little Batman there is in it. The name in the title is less of a character than a plot device, and we spend virtually no time learning anything about how he sees the world. Really it comes down to the math of it though; Burton has stuffed not just Danny…

  • Ip Man 4: The Finale

    Ip Man 4: The Finale

This movie is basically a mob of teenage boys yelling, “Fight! Fight! Fight!” The martial arts choreography is impressive and even well shot, but it’s aesthetically bereft to the point of distraction.

  • Kuffs

I lived in LA when this movie came out and I remember the billboards promoting it all over town. I never went to see it because even then, when all of its clichés were thirty years younger than they are today, it looked absurdly shallow. Now having finally watched it for the first time, it feels like a time capsule prepared by the least thoughtful representatives that 1992 could find. The movie is just a series of incredibly thin superficialities…

  • Sonic the Hedgehog

    Sonic the Hedgehog

After watching this I felt alive again. Because I died a thousand deaths before it was over.

  • Dora and the Lost City of Gold

Dora and the Lost City of Gold

At first I thought this could be kind of interesting but as I watched it I kept thinking, “Who is this for?” Was there really a marketing plan that postulated a market of tweens who had outgrown the TV show and who were yearning for it to be reimagined as a cheap “Raiders of the Lost Ark” knockoff? Likely what happened was that the producers got ahead of themselves when they casted Isabela Moner as the teenage Dora. She is truly terrific but even her enthusiasm can’t save the limp script and painfully self-aware humor.

  • Destroyer

    Showy and overlong.

  • Seven Psychopaths

    Seven Psychopaths

McDonagh thinks himself very clever, and that is the sole basis for this weightless trifle.

  • The Secret Life of Pets 2

The Secret Life of Pets 2

If only they’d just invested as much energy into the story as they did into the complex CG renderings.
