Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Is wizarding as a soap opera an improvement over wizarding as bureaucracy? Watch this movie and find out (if you can stay awake).

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

On rewatch the plot and direction are no better. But Yates gets credit for casting an amazing array of faces.

  • The Grinch

    The Grinch

The question with these movies is how to make a slim picture book sufficient for a feature film. The answer here is to spread it out incredibly, incredibly thin.

  • Zatoichi the Fugitive

    Zatoichi the Fugitive

  • The Fighting Sullivans

    The Fighting Sullivans

Flagrantly untruthful about how human beings actually behave, but also a little sweet.

  • To All the Boys I've Loved Before

To All the Boys I've Loved Before

Charming performances and a penchant for Hughesian social ‘stakes’ can’t save this movie from its tepid plot twists. The characters never manage to get a step ahead of the audience, contributing to a tiresome undertow throughout the film. Also it’s egregiously unrealistic about race; despite the fact that it’s led by an Asian actor there’s not an ounce of authentic Asian-ness throughout. It shows that sometimes the cost of representation is that the thing that is represented becomes unrecognizable, or even absent.

  • Crazy Rich Asians

    Crazy Rich Asians

For those who care, a terrible choice: do you want breakthrough in representation or do you want a compelling narrative? So frustrating.

  • BlacKkKlansman

Surprisingly conventional for a long time, then just sloppy.

  • Night Train to Munich

    Night Train to Munich

    Kindergarten level action and suspense.

  • Suspicion

    Dumb characters behaving dumbly.

  • A LEGO Brickumentary

    A LEGO Brickumentary

Basically a toy commercial—but for a very good toy.
