Promising Young Woman

Promising Young Woman ★★★★½

holy shit. holy shit. this is high wire filmmaking. one foot wrong and promising young woman could have been nothing more than an embarassingly misguided failure. instead, it’s a masterpiece. the cinematography, the performances, the score/soundtrack, the pacing, the goddamn title card(!), every single aspect of this film fires on all cylinders. it’s also unflinchingly audacious. hugely so. the trailer depicts this as a feminist exercise in #girlpower, and to a certain extent it is, but fennell veers away from the overly simplified ‘men bad, women good’ route she so easily could have taken, instead opting to travel to some morally grey areas i really wasn’t expecting, which generates a sense of tension and unpredictability unmatched by anything i’ve seen all year, whilst also ensuring the film will not only be discussed, but debated (it's bound to be contentious), long after the final needle drop. i don’t want to say anymore until this is officially released, but promising young woman knocked the wind out of me. i can’t see it not becoming a modern classic.
