    Festival Express

    ★★★★

Interesting for historical reasons - the footage on the train of Janis Joplin, Jerry Garcia and others - this documentary follows a traveling festival that went across Canada in 1970. The songs are not exceptional, but there's some footage of Janis with her band, of the Dead with Pigpen, and many others, which make it worth watching.

Jerry Garcia Band: Live at Shoreline

    ★★★★½

In the 1990s, Jerry Garcia seemed to be more interested in his solo work than in the Grateful Dead. This rare film of him playing with his own band shows him in top form, playing a wonderful selection of songs, celebrating the death of the Dead's keyboard player, Brent Mydland. Jerry rocks in this show, much more than he did with the Dead in 1990.

An imperfect movie about one of the greatest group of musicians of the 20th century. Unfortunately, instead of being a concert film, it cuts between music and fan footage. Filmed at the Grateful Dead's "retirement" run at Winterland, in October 1974, it features the band at its peak. While many of the songs are cut, the DVD contains more than 100 minutes of full song performances. The movie has many weaknesses, but the music is sublime.

A slightly cheesy love story, but it's Aaron Sorkin. It's clear that this was the germ for The West Wing, and there were even some lines in the movie that he re-used in the series. Martin Sheen as the chief of staff presented some cognitive dissonance for anyone who's seen West Wing.
