El laberinto del fauno is more of a dark fable than a fairy tale. It moves seemlessly between the world of fantasy and the war between rebels and fascists - both being very engrossing. Either of the two could have been a good movie on its own.
Sergi López makes a formidable villain in the war while the magic world puts forward equally nightmarish creatures, especially the Pale Man.
Del Toro manages to have both stories coexist side by side with the key being Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) who's able to be courageous without ever losing the fact that she's a child.
Maribel Verdú also deserves a mention for a great performance as the second heroine.
Stylistically confident, thrilling, tragic and refreshing - El laberinto del fauno is a great movie!
