movies are kinda cool and all I guess
Entertaining, but the series is getting a bit stale. In the earliest movies, I thought Zatoichi would be more of a round, dynamic character. But that hasn’t really happened. I can’t remember the movie, but one of the first 3, maybe, had me thinking that his wrestling with his own violence and yakuza lifestyle would be more of a dominant theme, leading to more complexity in the character, his relationships, and his behavior—even the plot lines. Not so much.
Not the best of the early Zatoichi films. Yes, they all follow a formula, with Zatoichi’s prowess at the center. But this is the first one that felt like what it primarily had to offer was a pastiche of plot elements and devices from the first four films.
Being Zatoichi, it was still enjoyable, but with more “ho hum” than I care to admit.
I needed this history of the war in Syria. It presents a basic timeline of the violence, summarizing the main combatants and the behaviors of international players. It's only a beginning, but now I feel prepared to learn more.
