Walked into that film expecting some bad times but walked out with seeing a well developed critique of cinema? Goddard using his own signature style to critique auteurism and genre? They layers of meta are DEEP.
Drew Goddard gleefully toys with the elements of style and genre, so much so that by the film’s end he completely deconstructs the iconic cinematic clichés and tropes we have all become so accustomed to. Consequently, his joy in doing so makes for an unexpectedly gripping and wildly entertaining film.
The visual juxtapositions in this film are INCREDIBLE. The living being surrounded by dead bodies. The ruins that are both large and empty, somber and beautiful. Ingrid Bergman being reduced to a minuscule scale in the presence of opulent, imposing, sculptures. The window of separation between Bergman in her car and the world that exists in the streets of Napoli just beyond her eye line.
