What the hell is this? And I ask this in the most envious tone possible. I’ve seen all its successors (its stream-of-consciousness editing has influenced countless filmmakers, such as Martin Scorsese and Jim Jarmusch), and yet this original is too audacious to swallow immediately as a great film. I will think on it, and certainly rewatch it, but what does it mean? If I was on acid while watching, maybe I’d know.
