    Hearts Beat Loud

i don't know if it's just the fact that i automatically love any indie musical dramedy but i loved loved loved this. vastly underrated, heartfelt movie about father-daughter relationships that uses music to understand some of the complications of opening up to a parent. the music is great too. don't miss out on it.

  • The Girl in the Spider's Web

The Girl in the Spider's Web

*me, ready to write a thorough critique based on having read all the books*

  • Slaughterhouse Rulez

    Slaughterhouse Rulez

it's nowhere near Shaun of the Dead type good and it's mostly unfunny but at least it sort of picks up in the second half. there seems to be one mediocre film after another these days, so i'll take what i can get (and yeah, at this point this includes 2 1/2 star movies)

  • Bohemian Rhapsody

    Bohemian Rhapsody

i'm so conflicted about this movie...

its biggest flaw is that it treats Queen more as legends and less as people. i mean, for a film about a band and a performer who always sought to defy expectations and be authentic (as one scene ironically points out), Bohemian Rhapsody just feels so fake, formulaic, forced, and at times painfully revisionistic (i mean, the live aid concert took place before mercury was diagnosed, but they're changing that to fit the narrative).…

  • First Man

    First Man

thoughts i had while watching First Man:

    1) how many times does ryan gosling say "thank you" this should be a drinking game

    2) this would be an amazing 4D experience

    3) i wanna show this film to someone from the 18th century

    4) of course there's a jazzy soundtrack

    5) too much rocket science, not enough claire foy

    5) whitey on the moon

  • Venom

man is this a complete mess. but i had fun in a weird way?

  • The House with a Clock in Its Walls

The House with a Clock in Its Walls

before watching this i thought "wow, cate blanchett and jack black are in the same movie" and now after watching it this is still the most remarkable thing about it*

*okay, maybe it's actually baby jack black with a grown up head peeing uncontrollably

  • Lucas

don't mistake this for another 80s high school movie... sure, the dialogue can get cheesy and cliche, but it's also beautifully shot and wonderfully realized in a way that really gets you.

  • Mission: Impossible - Fallout

    Mission: Impossible - Fallout

tom cruise is one of the few people who says "I'll figure it out" and actually does every single time. i'm not sure if that inspires me or shatters my self-esteem

  • Punch-Drunk Love

    Punch-Drunk Love

pta could keep dropping epic masterpieces and this will probably still be my favorite film of his

  • Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

    Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

    mission: impossibler
