Blue ★★★★

Sometimes I glanced away or stared beyond the screen or closed my eyes; one of the unique marvels of Blue is that it works upon you whether you look at it or not, and in this way feels as inescapable and inevitable as its protagonist's plight. AIDS is the traumatic shaping event of the 1990s, its effects depicted cinematically in myriad ways from moving to cloying, but few are this powerfully idiosyncratic.
