This takes the cake as one of the most tragic romantic stories I've seen. A melodramatic doomed tale of unrequited love, where a woman falls in love with a man at a young age but he fails to recognize her over the years. Its brisk pacing and poetic narration make this a memorable film, also thanks to Joan Fontaine's excellent lead performance. It didn't hit me in the emotions like it did for many others, but it's nonetheless a classic romance that is worth rediscovering, with a lingering aura of sadness right from the opening scene that is carried on throughout the years of Lisa's life.
