If this isn’t a strong basis for every cult horror film ever made, I don’t know what is. The pacing to which the investigation grows from interviewing unhelpful locals to observing strange rituals to infiltrating a full-blown fucked up sun-scorched festival of sacrifices is alarmingly engrossing and disturbing.
Really enjoyed Phantasm on a rewatch. The confidence with which it embraces its outsider mentality approach to horror is refreshingly original (and sometimes hilarious). A solid premise paired with good practical works helps sell its overt strangeness. Angus Scrimm's The Tall Man is instantly iconic.
