This is a relentless series of Hollywood clichés (down to the disappointing boss fight), but it is somewhat endearingly unembarassed by this fact. John C. Reilly is having a lot of fun in this movie; it's entertaining but also highlights how little fun all the other actors are having. As Legendary keeps making these movies, I hope they discover the wacky ensemble joy of Pacific Rim and don't descend into the stale repetition of Jurassic World.

Minus one-half star for casual orientalism.

One of the most aesthetically beautiful films I've ever seen.

This was deliciously fun while still taking its subject matter seriously. It works as a great portrait of the corrupt workings of modern American suburbia. Plus wonderful performances all around.

I love that this is mostly a movie about Ellie and Paul. Friendship is a kind of love that is messy and overlooked and there should be more movies about it!

And I enjoyed the respectful nod/dissent towards Hedwig and the Angry Inch thing going on here (I might be reading into things a bit but I'm gonna choose to believe this interpretation because it fits so well to the experience I had watching this movie).
