This movie is better in memory than when I'm watching it, and I think it's because the story is really good and connects really well to The Wrath of Khan and The Voyage Home. There's lots to love about this movie: once again it has a simple but effective space battle, the Kirk/Spock emotional arc is compelling and adds McCoy in a touching way, and the two big Enterprise moments are excellent and memorable. The part that sticks out as the core flaw is that everything happening on the Genesis planet is kind of a mess (honestly would anyone have been mad if they hand-waved away Pon Farr). It's best to watch this movie soon after its predecessor and soon before its sequel. And, hey, if some clunky execution here gave Nimoy the directorial experience he needed to make the next one, it was more than worth it!
