Licorice Pizza

Licorice Pizza ★★★★★

“You’re not cool, and your breath smells.”

This movie is funny and mostly makes me very happy, but it’s also got a dark cloud of sadness hovering over it because it feels like it’s never going to be this good again for Gary or Alana. We see the ugly real world creep into their lives more and more; soon it will be all there is, they will become different people, and be consumed by it. In that sense it reminds me of American Graffiti where, after the night in 1962, the rest of the kids’ lives can be easily fitted into a pre-end credits footnote, because everything that happened after this didn’t even matter.
