To Be or Not to Be ★★★★½

Never before has tonal whiplash been so darkly hilarious. Waging war against the Nazis and their repugnant ideology with the weapon he's best suited to use, humor, Ernst Lubitsch skewers and entertains in equal measure here, balancing a staggering number of spinning plates on his way to creating one of the most audacious comedies of all time. The effect that this film must've had on a teenage Mel Brooks can't possibly be overstated.
