Been a while! Still an absolute beauty that is the fun action movie version of this part of the story. I maintain it's a very good introduction to the whole deal, too, since the animation is smooth and modern in a way that might soothe some misgivings. I think the middle section where Shinji is disaffected and the storytelling is all visual is really good, much better than I remembered. It's a different experience now that the entire film series…

I've been circling this one for a while but it took my friend wanting to watch it to finally do so. It's out there! The movie it reminded me the most of was 2017's The Endless, another slow-burn movie with a complex world and a cosmic horror vibe.

What if a guy who couldn't quite remember what happened during ALIEN tried to explain it?

I mean, I guess. The whole added backstory for the Major isn't interesting at all, the "new boyfriend" guy is an obnoxious, terrible character, and the little teases and in-jokes about Togusa are at the level of the "yellow spandex" joke from the first X-Men movie. The animation is still fine and there are a few nice fights, but this represents serious diminishing returns from a series that was already struggling. A shame, because I really wanted to like these. Hopefully the fourth one or the upcoming movie offer something a little more interesting.
