Would be very surprised if there was a cultural moment more iconic in all of 2021 than the opening sequence of this film, tbh. This was really fun... except when it was really bleak. But fun! But bleak!

This was a much sweeter film than I had expected, and an incredibly moving one too; with sound design so incredible it made me miss cinema harder than I have at any other point this last year plus. Shame the power of the ending was slightly undermined by the Rangers fans setting off flares outside, eh.

Long, LONG before Derry Girls came Alan Warner's The Sopranos: a riotous, raunchy tale of Catholic school choirgirls from the north of Scotland of the 1990s on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the big city for a singing competition. Perfectly cast (with predominantly unknown actresses in the lead roles) and perfectly soundtracked - particularly in its wrenching closing moments - this is the filthy, feelgood film you had no idea you were waiting for. And wait you must, thanks to Covid-19.

High School Musical meets Shaun of the Dead in this sweet, sad, alternative Christmas zombie musical. I think that's all the genres we can squeeze in here, anyway.
