Surprise of the Summer: I love a Tarantino film.
The most fascinating of his recent stretch of historical fan-fic, mainly because he recognizes the limits of his genre catharsis. Are the revenge stories of 'Basterds' and 'Django' delightful & empowering? Sure, but they can't change the past. They're actively running from it. 'Hollywood' is a beautiful, patient, ethically complicated, but honest fantasy whose mind keeps drifting back to reality like a recurring nightmare you're trying in vain to forget. It's a fantasy that pushes us to confront reality, something Tarantino's never really done before.
Also the hottest Brad Pitt has ever looked onscreen & the most endearing, affable DiCaprio has been since the 90s.
