Charles Laughton putting on a acting masterclass
This is my third film from Bergman, the first being Seventh Seal which was good not great. The second being The Virgin Spring which I really liked. This however blew them both out of the water, and the weird thing is I couldn't even tell you why this worked for me so much. I'm not even gonna try writing some mindless drivel, because I know it wouldn't do this film justice. If for some reason you haven't checked this out I highly recommend you do.
Billy Wilder's financially and critically famed flop (WHAT?) is anything but. Douglas is Chuck Tatum who's fallen from grace as a top journalist. He stumbles across a story that could take him back to the mountain top. He's willing to do anything and exploit everyone to make it happen.
Douglas is enigmatic in his portrayal of Tatum. To say that this only my second film from the great man is an embarrassment. It's something that I'm definitely going to correct…

I have to admit I was a little worried going into this film, because what I've seen of classic French cinema has kind of flopped for me. However I have to say that Truffaut's pulled it out of the bag, and in doing so has revived my interest in French cinema.
