Peter Labuza’s review published on Letterboxd :
A hidden life
To protect a brother.
A tragedy is inevitable
But the camera tracks on.
Not much to say on this one really – kind of felt like more of a Mizoguchi story than an Ozu story. That’s what makes the ending so much more perplexing and intriguing. Mizoguchi would end with the two women holding each other, relishing the tragedy they’ve experienced. Ozu’s camera almost begins another plot, ending with two almost new-ish characters discussing another case and a moving camera shot. Would be curious to read anyone who has written on that ending.
