This ain't your grandma's Twin Peaks
While you could maybe argue that the film isn't strictly necessary – making explicit the past which the show alludes to so well – there is nothing like the impending doom of watching a story that we all know the ending to.
It also changes the focus of the narrative. It is no longer about the mystery of Laura Palmer but about her experience, her day to day reality. And interestingly, Leland's agency is also brought into question, making me wonder whether the entire supernatural aspect is just a coping mechanism for Laura (and the audience).
