4 and 5 star ratings for this on Letterboxd? What are you all on? And... can I have some?

The first hour and change is very solid Dark Knight detective stuff, riffing on a cool blend of neo-noir and catch-the-killer genre tropes. I bought into director Matt Reeves' vision for this new Gotham and his edgy recalibrations of classic characters. And I really dig the casting here: Robert Pattinson as a younger, angrier version of the caped crusader who behaves…

  • Scream

    I'm going for a rant.

Because I am so unbelievably tired of this creatively bankrupt era in which modern day hacks stand on the shoulders of older talent to retell stories that were already told so well, only to do so with less artistry and imagination. There is legitimately no motivation for doing another 'Scream' beyond financial incentive. There is no story begging to be told here; no creative vision that needed to be expressed. Basically, some accountants that moonlight…

Damn. I really wanted to like this. I take issue with anyone declaring 'Prey' being as good as -- or better than -- the original 'Predator' because this is fairly disposable stuff once you get past the uniqueness of the casting and reimagined premise.

Creative opportunities are limited when it comes to designing a story around the Predator mythology. It started out life as a simple slasher-monster movie and, conceptually, lacks the bandwidth to expand beyond its most rudimentary stalk-and-chase…

  • Predators

The greatest hindrance to 'Predators' is having Adrien Brody as its lead, who is severely miscast in the role of a borderline sociopathic mercenary who rediscovers his honour in battle. This really required someone more charismatic leading the pack, like Colin Farrell or Christian Bale. Now those hell-raisers would have gassed this baby up! That said, Brody is a fine actor and brings his A-game anyway. He fully commits to the character and scenario.

'Predators' is actually a fairly entertaining…

Derek DelGaudio's In & of Itself

I need to talk a little bit about the worrying mini-phenomenon of Hulu's 'In & Of Itself'. I watched it the other day, rated it three stars, and felt like it was a pretty impressive (if a little melodramatic) filmed performance of an Off-Broadway hit show that sees a magician emotionally connect with his audience in a way that other performers only dream of doing. I won't spoil how Derek DelGaudio goes about achieving this because the film works best if…

    Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey

It's hard to find sympathy for people who prostitute their children to paedophiles because they are told to by the batshit, backwards cult they are enrolled in. This is truly infuriating viewing; watching the numbskulls of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) share a collective delusion together about their child rapist leader essentially being the prophet of God. The women come off as creepy Stepford Wives clones, while the men are useless, spineless cowards who care…
