Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom ★★★★★

Chadwick Boseman Performances I Have Seen Ranked

* We, movie fans, talk a lot about debuts. May be not enough about exits. The reason probably is that great exits are few compared to great debuts. Two such great final works I can think of are Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut and Lumet's Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. But even in comparison with these giants Chadwick's final performance seems equally impressive to me. I am not being merely sympathetic. It was that good a performance. All the fire in his being was put into it. May be it is because Kubrick and Lumet didn't know they were going to go soon. Fiery is the best word to describe Chadwick's work in this movie. He kept his best for last. Rest in Peace Chadwick. After Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, you became even more of an inspiration to artists and those who love art everywhere.

* This is a great movie. I remember seeing a Denzel Washington interview when Fences (a movie I loved) came out. He compared August Wilson to Shakespeare (Both Fences and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom are based on the plays of Wilson) I didn't think much of it then though I loved Fences. But after Ma Rainey's, I understand what Denzel meant then (Denzel is a producer of Ma Rainey's). The story and dialogues are the main ingredient that makes this a great movie. All that credit goes to August Wilson. Of course Reuben Santiago-Hudson who adapted the screenplay and George C Wolfe who directed the movie deserve credit too.

* Viola Davis is a genius. I don't have any words to talk about her performance. They won't be enough. I just want to bow my head in awe and admiration.

* The performances, story and powerful dialogues make this movie a very visceral experience. I enjoyed every second of it.
