The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Grand Budapest Hotel ★★★★

Presentationally, this is a masterpiece. I didn't really expect anything different, but holy shit is it impressive. Every frame is gorgeous. The production design is meticulous and ornate, and everything is executed at such a massive scale. The aspect ratio changes, the framing and dramatic pans and zooms, all remind us constantly that we are watching a movie, in the best way. I adore the costuming and that every actor speaks in their native accent, almost making this feel like a stage play a lot of the time. Speaking of the actors, on top of everything the cast is outrageous. Wes Anderson's style is perfected here, and it absolutely makes this film what it is. The Grand Budapest Hotel celebrates and reminds us why cinema is such a beloved artform.

The only criticism I have is that the story, unfortunately, didn't really grab me. It is massively entertaining and well delivered, but I wasn't really emotionally hooked in the way that I have been by Anderson's other films. It's really really great though! I'm glad I watched this. Also I didn't know it was possible for me to love Saoirse Ronan more than I already do but dear god she really is lovely in this. I, too, would like to marry her in a perfectly framed intimate wedding ceremony on a high cliff in the middle of a blizzard as I wear matching purple suits with my eccentric but well-meaning boss. But alas
