The Sea of Trees could've been something great, it had all the ingredients to be great. It has a great cast, a director who has proven that he can make great films, a great score, beautiful cinematography and a great premise. Sadly, it stumbles due to its horribly melodramatic script and it running at a snails pace. The Sea of Trees is one of the slowest movies that I've seen this year. Most of the movie is Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe walking around the forest aimlessly with nothing interesting happening and when it's not it's incredibly melodramatic flashbacks. The performances are alright but Chris Sparling's script is trying so hard to be meaningful that it ends up being dreadful. The darkest moments in this movie don't work becuase of that. The Sea of Trees isn't the atrocity that it was led up to be but it certainly isn't good. This was such a missed opportunity to be something great but it ended up being a bore.
