The Last Kernel’s review published on Letterboxd:
Bringing back a classic franchise is always a rocky idea - could be a hit or a flop. It feels like the Saw franchise has been resurrected a few too many times, and back when Jigsaw came out in 2017 it was wrapped up well. Leaving viewers satisfied and with a good backlog to rewatch time again.
Banking in on the trademark gore and iconic standing of Saw, spiral aims to piggy back its popularity. However, despite the high points of blood and gore stereotypical of the Saw universe Spiral is a very lacklustre viewing experience.
Even the acting chops of Samuel L Jackson, Max Minghella and even and points Chris Rock couldn't save this from falling far from the top. It is a shame, as a better storyline more intrinsically connected to the Saw origins would have been an interesting concept compared to the very loose linking here. After all, top names and a trailblazing series should be the recipe for horror perfection.
Without giving too much away, the film ended with an air that we could get another instalment. I really hope this is not the case.
