Malignant ★★★★

This was just so much damn fun.  James Wan lets us know what we’re in for right off the bat with his over-the-top opening scene.  From there, it starts to feel like an 80’s DePalma flick, oozing with stylized moodiness, building towards an awesome twist that truly knocked me on my ass.  There’s a set piece in the third act that felt like a scene from V for Vendetta, and really injected intensity into that final section.  Sure, it resorts to formula here and there, and may drag a bit in the middle, but Wan and company came up with some great ideas, and executed them very well.  I have very few complaints.  Wan understands tone, and how to control it with precision, and you’re either in tune to it or you’re not.
