Housebound is a unique and engaging horror comedy from New Zealand. It's not really gruesome, but it has suspense mixed with humor. The main character who is on house arrest at her mother's home is not very likeable, but as she investigates the strange bumps in the night with a perpetual sneer, she grew on me. Her mother is kooky but sweet and a bit of an enabler to her grumpy daughter. There are unexpected elements in what seems like a familiar haunted house trope which elevate this movie well beyond a standard horror flick. By the end of the film, Housebound reveals warmth, depth, and poignancy that you rarely experience in this genre.
