The film has nothing compelling to say about Elvis the man, nor Elvis the King of Rock n Roll. The film is only tangentially interested in the King, which is a damn shame. The conceit of Elvis’ evil manager being the audience’s eyes and ears of the events didn’t work for me. Tom Hanks’ performance feels too cartoonish in contrast with Austin Butler’s technically good but emotionally vacant portrayal of Elvis. There’s two strands in the film, and they’re at odds…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Goddammit, this was a fascinating binge and then the end was so unsatisfying. Not only was the case unsolved (why? you already deviated so much from the true story, why not just give us something?) but it ended up as campy horror.

When you were eleven, what did you see yourself doing now?

Memory expressed as it is, scattershot, emphasizing every moment that wouldn’t make it into a traditional film. Lingering silences, cloudy reflections, naps by a pool, playing a board game, singing karaoke, or dancing to David Bowie; these are the moments that mean the world to us. Tiny vignettes of time spent together are what we have to make sense of those who mean the most to us. And when…

I love everything and everyone from the Phadke family. It reminds me of my own household and how we interact with each other. From experiencing flickers of joy to moments of sadness, at the end of the day, we're still a family. The way of communication that is depicted can only be understood by people who have lived with a joint family and acknowledge that the words they speak aren't meant to be offensive in delivery, but can be…

Is there any American action comedy even remotely as good as Kung Fu Hustle? Probably not.

Will there be an American action comedy in the future that will be remotely as good as Kung Fu Hustle? Definitely not.

I like Maika Monroe in this. And I really like how the film looks. I even don't mind that it's slow. But I really really did not like that it plays it very straight. Yes, the main character didn't make straight up nonsense decisions like Barbarian, but at least Barbarian tried to do something different.

I know we shouldn’t gatekeep art but I’m going to gatekeep the fuck out of this movie in 5-7 years when y’all start calling it a misunderstood masterpiece.

Showed this to a couple of my friends last night, and I realised -- probably for the first time -- that this is not only slowly becoming one of my favourite films, but it's also a 5-star film. The writing and acting are just exceptional. Great cinematography. Excellent editing. Not a single shot is wasted.

Kogonada knocked this out of the park. It felt like he made exactly the movie he wanted to make. The construction -- how all the pieces seem to fit together -- makes me think of a Ted Chiang short story. I haven't read the story this is based on, but now I want to.

Also, this has possibly the best opening credits of any film I've seen this year!

Something I'd been mulling since my first viewing: is Tár actually any good? The person, not the movie. From what we see, she doesn't seem to be a particularly gifted composer, despite her EGOT status. She's regarded as a great conductor, but what does that really mean? When asked to explain why she's more than just a human metronome who's only there to mark time, her answer is basically, "Well, that IS why I'm there, but it's a very important…
