Matthew Legarreta’s review published on Letterboxd:
When I first started watching The Babadook, I thought "Oh, this is like We Need to Talk About A Kevin!" And then I said "Oh, this is like The Sixth Sense!" And then it was "Oh, this is like The Shining!" And after that it was "Oh, this is like The Evil Dead!" But by the end of the film, none of those similarities matter -- The Babadook is wholly The Babadook. Incredibly well made from first time writer/director Jennifer Kent, The Babadook has the stellar scares that every good horror film needs, but is grounded in a heartfelt and riveting story that most horror films lack. Even as someone who's not a huge fan of the genre, it's hard to deny that The Babadook isn't a really damn good film worthy of the praise it is getting.
