Fantastic acting and lovely cinematography make an otherwise forgettable movie enjoyably watchable, although I wouldn't be rushing out to see it again.
This movie was everything I hoped it would be and more. I've loved this little dude for years — when I was in college we used to watch the shorts over and over in my Intro to Journalism class (for some reason). The film captures all the heart and humour of the shorts and amplifies it in a beautiful way. Absolutely loved it.
Also, big year for movies with Jenny Slate, a reference to everything bagels, and a googly-eyed stop-motion creature that made me ugly cry in public.
Austin Butler was fantastic — the best biopics are the ones less concerned with the actor perfectly matching the subject's looks or sound and more with the actor matching their essence or their energy. They could've loaded him up with way more prosthetics, etc. or done that weird mix-his-voice-in-with-the-real-voice thing they did in Bohemian Rhapsody, and the film would've suffered for it. This was a stellar performance that felt remarkably genuine in such a frantic, bombastic film.
Tom Hanks... what…
