Chameleon Street

Chameleon Street ★★★½

Strange, knotty, gnomic zen koan of a movie; the central conflict is clearly delineated but almost impossible to define. Mr. Street, the main character, turns the concept of 'identity' into a four-dimensional chess game of interlocking impostures to express his disdain for the categories and limitations that conventional thinking imposes on his black body. (He treats his cis-het-maleness as sacrosanct and inalterable, but everything else is negotiable.)

Soft 7/10 "rating". mostly because I spent 90 minutes wishing for a movie that didn't look like homemade shit. Not everyone has Larry Cohen chops for overcoming budget limitations.
