Yi Yi ★★★½

Taiwanese charmer in a Hsaio Hsien Hou mode, very similar to Summer At Grandpa's but broader in scope and richer in detail. If that were all you got, that might be enough, but there's also a canny use of literary structural ploys and symbolism that add some additional sparkle from time to time.

Has a scene echoing the Griffith Park Observatory sequence in that Nick Ray movie, just to play glass-bead-game with it...

PS: As much as I enjoyed these peoples' company, spending three hours with them seemed just as self-indulgent as the 3 or 4 hours I spent with those people in Eureka. Or no?
