The Last Picture Show

The Last Picture Show ★★★★

The mix of empathy for and judgement of certain characters by ol' Peter B feels strange to me at times, but this is powerful cinema at the end of the day anyhow, character-driven and evoking strong emotions and a very literary feeling. Pure American Melancholy like only the late '60s/early '70s movies could provide.

Definitely has the sometimes dated flavor of a very "Masculine Classic" but hearing about Polly Platt's somewhat unsung work in bringing the film to life helps to illuminate more nuanced layers and themes at play. The cast is astonishing, every award deserved.
