The Northman

The Northman ★★★★

Might have wanted a bit more ambiguousness and subversion of perspective, but there's still a substantial enough amount to chew on amidst the more straightforward macho revenge shenanigans. And either way, those shenanigans are depicted with the incredible craft and historically fascinating feeling you'd expect from an Eggers picture. His preoccupations scale up pretty well, and feel refreshingly tactile, given current Hollywood trends. Love some of the strange color grading happening during the nighttime scenes, the grassy greens, the eerie fog. A classic-style epic, brutal and propulsive, with perhaps just enough interest in getting you to ask questions about itself.
