    Gangster Squad

    ★★

"Gangster Squad" ( it has a pretty juvenile title for starters) is a honourable, yet highly flawed attempt to create a modern version of "The Untouchables". Taking influence from all the right places, including neo-noir classics such as "L.A Confidential", "Goodfellas" and "Chinatown", "Gangster Squad" is still incapable of creating any form of decent entertainment, and here's why.

First off is the characters. The film, to Ruben Fleischers credit, does attempt to build up understandable and captivating characters, but not…

    Highlander

    ★★★

"Highlander" is Russell Mulcahy's second feature, following up on his dynamically visual debut "Razorback". While "Highlander" is too a sensory journey through images, it does lack in the way of reasonable conflict. It drags out far too long than it should, preferring to engage the audience visually rather than narratively, and ultimately being almost devoid of any real emotion. The aesthetics are indeed amazing but after almost 2 hours of visuals and no focus on the narrative, it ends up being dull and un-engaging at some point. A true example of "style over substance"

Probably the thing I love the most about Goodfellas is that it is a movie. It doesn't pretend to be anything else except an honest to goodness movie. Its 2 hours and…

    Batman

    ★★★★

Tim Burton creates a gothic dystopian city of Gotham, which is complex and darkly beautiful. This backdrop is a bit of a contrast to the story, which is a lot less complicated yet just as compelling. The first dark superhero film that set the tone for many more hero films to come.
