Once Upon a Time in America

Watched again after several years as a tribute to Morricone and it is every bit as good as I remembered. A brilliant piece of work, with breathtakingly authentic sets, masterly use of camera and a score which is the perfect binding agent for this tragic, elegiac, riveting tale. If it has a flaw, and this can’t be levelled at Leone, it is the film still feels unfinished – even in the 4 hour+ version. This is most apparent in the…

    In the Tall Grass

The first thirty minutes were reasonably suspenseful as the main characters got lost in the titular grass and their discontent turns to panic. SFX in search of a movie and they found one with this godawful remake. Disney appears to have shelved all notions of creating original material, instead, they prefer to wade through their back catalogue and turn all of their cartoons into live-action films. If the stories were half-decent, I might be more forgiving but this derivative nonsense is as old as Cain and Abel and about as relevant. If that wasn't all, since Robin Williams' turn in Aladdin, no Disney…
