Bell, Book and Candle ★★★★

Delightfully enjoyable light comedy. Perhaps Stewart was too old for the part, but as the chemistry was so good with Novak it was easy to overlook. I am a sucker for wintry settings and I have rarely seen one look so ravishing in Technicolor: Wong Howe's work was top-drawer. The script was breezy, fun and surprising. The acting was solid, with Stewart showing a real comic flair and Novak flitting comfortably between aloof unattainability and vulnerability. For a film about witches, I, for one, fell under its spell. One of my favourite Christmas films.
