A Trip Down Market Street Before the Fire

A Trip Down Market Street Before the Fire ★★★★½

I ran across a colorized and otherwise improved version of this and I have become totally obsessed. Some highlights of my research rabbit hole:
- this was part of something called Hale's Tours of the World, which had a specially constructed theaters that were meant to simulate a railway/streetcar journey!
- the film was originally dated to 1905 but by consulting weather reports and car registrations and doing trigonometry with the shadows on the building a couple of researchers dated it to late March, 1906, which puts it less than a month before the earthquake
- a lot of the car traffic was probably staged to give more of an impression of modernity because you can see the same cars pass by the camera multiple times
I just think history is really neat and glimpses of the past like this give me a lot of feelings
