This is a romance. We don’t see Lena and Madeleine explicitly acting on their passion for each other, but the movie doesn't seem to hide the nature of their feelings. Taking place soon after World War II, the times wasn’t in their favor. The dreadness of the closet was still safer than some vicinities.
