    Candyman

    ★★★½

I’m in the odd position of having seen the 2021 Candyman before the original, but I don’t think flipping the viewing order hurt my enjoyment of either. The clarity of themes in Nia DaCosta’s Candyman actually primed me to better receive the message that Candyman 1992, the more poetic and artful of the two, is built on.

As for scariness - I’ll say this. It’s anno Domini 2021, I’m a 36 year old man, and I certainly will not and would not say Candyman 5x in front of a mirror.

"This is water. What I want is the ocean."

Probably the most mature Pixar movie to date, with themes as complex and heavy as Up or Inside Out. This is the best looking 3D animated film I've ever seen, with both the fantastical and realistic settings looking amazing.

Definitely see this appealing to older viewers, jazz fans, and people who have experienced wondering about their purpose, their spark. This is also some of the best African-American representation I've seen on…

"He ties me up, touches me, makes me watch, but he never lets me see his face."

This should be the happiest moment of Betty's life. She's finally gotten her big break as the lead in an opera, and the whole world is offering her acclaim. But she's also being stalked by a killer who repeatedly abducts her, ties her up, and forces her to watch him murder those close to her. Who is this man? Why is he so…
