Silent Running ★★★

Douglas Trumbull's directorial debut is a rather moving ecologically themed space drama featuring a sympathetic Bruce Dern who makes it his sole mission to protect the plant life aboard his spaceship from direct orders to destroy it. The proceedings may sometimes fall a little flat and this is not alleviated by the excess of Joan Baez ballads (although they are admired by some), but I guess drifting in space with no one but three little robots for company would be a very similar experience - as presented so imaginatively here.
